Users Corner Management

This page documents the internal management of the UsersCorner overseen by the community assistant (users and conference corner team lead). It is intended as an introduction for new community team members or for people who just generally want to understand the QGIS community process.

The work to update, review, recruit new volunteers and extend the Users Corner is managed by the community assistant (users and conference corner team lead) and spread between people who each have a specific area of resposibility. A current list of contributing people is available at the Project Organigram.

TODO

  • discuss the structure of the Users' Corner (see options for structure)
  • migrate entries from old wiki in compliance with above
  • look out for / ask people to write case studies
  • add Gary's workshop paper from FOSS4G 2007
  • add more LiveCDs
  • check if the teaching material from Richard Plant still works with newest version of QGIS

Options for structure

I checked some U'C pages of different websites. Here is what I found so far.
Please add comments, suggestions, and notes or delete irrelevant ones.

1. U'C is a space for users to describe where and how they use QGIS (in there offices and projects). Like "references" on commercial websites. We included already one case study.

2. U'C is a space where we collect different FAQ, tutorials, HowTos, Whish-Lists written by users; also in a variety of different languages. This is what we did so far at the old Wiki-page.

3. U'C is a open platform for users to write about all kind of stuff they have in mind (regarding the use of QGIS of course ;-))

  • Case studies a very important IMO. It offers the new users an idea of the flexibility and power of the software and it gives the trained user the option to present his/her work. If it should be included in the U'C it is also worth thinking about a renaming of U'C: like "QGIS in action", "QGIS implementations", "QGIS in business"... or (to refer to the ESRI.com webpage) "Users success stories". I think it is that important that we should add a link under "About QGIS" on the webpage... this is as much of importance as screenshots for a first impression of QGIS.

  • Many of these contributions could also go to the blog or forum. Maybe a link "documentation written by users" at the documentation page of the website would be a good place too. But we should keep the website clean and that kind of page could get crowed with links, which also tend to be out-dated very fast. For myself: if I would look for FAQ, tutorials, or HowTos I would check the documentation website, the blog, or the forum first. Looking for it under community does not seem obvious to me (in the first place as a new user at least).

  • Well, this can also be done in a much better way in the forum.
